When talking about Uruguay, lots of people generally think of huge herds of cattle led through the Pampas by gauchos, who can be compared to American cowboys - maybe coupled with a desire for unlimited freedom. Unfortunately, only a few people actually know more about this beautiful country.

Even though those little things that shape Uruguay’s image are typical and definitely play an important role for the country, they are only one side. Stunning beaches and fascinating cities will take your expectations to a whole different level.

The city center of the capital Montevideo, the Colonia Suize (Swiss Colony) as well as the Old Town of Colonia are some of the cultural attractions. It is also strongly recommended to explore the sandy beaches in Punta del Este, Mercedes or at Rio Negro while observing fascinating animals like whales, seals, sea lions, guanacos, alligators and taipans in their natural environment.

You should not miss out on the opportunity to try the typical asado: a barbecue with different kinds of meat, mostly beef, in some regions also sheep, goat, pork and poultry cooked horizontally on a charcoal or wooden grill. In Uruguay, asados play an important role in the social life and are made on festive, but not too formal occasions or traditionally on weekends with family or friends.

1. Montevideo

Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, is the political, cultural and financial center of the country and has, according to a study, even the highest quality of life in South America. This can be seen in the numerous museums, theaters, the historical center, plazas like the Plaza de Justicia or Plaza Zabala, the Cathedral and churches, the small alleys as well as the beautiful parks. You should take your time for your discovery trip through Montevideo. The nightlife is also famous and exciting especially because of the traditional tango bars - a dance as typical for Uruguay as for Argentina. Dive into a new culture and experience the South American joie de vivre! Not far from the capital you will also find beautiful sandy beaches that invite you to relax and get away from the hectic rush of the capital.

2. Punta del Este and Isla de Lobos

The area around Punta del Este is especially famous for its white sandy beaches. It is a popular holiday destination for Uruguayans to spend their days off, enjoy sunsets together, doing water sports as well as to gather in numerous small bars and live the South American way of life. You can visit the island Isla de Lobos nearby and observe a big sea lion colony or visit whales and dolphins as well as other sea animals at places that can be easily reached within one day.

3. The Pampas

The pampas are grasslands extending through a large part of the country. Endless picturesque landscapes with rivers and small settlements shape a breathtaking view.

The pampas are the home of the gauchos, the descendants of the Spanish and indios, who take their herds of cattle through endless sceneries. Experience the feeling of freedom and enjoy one of the worldwide famous steaks at a typical asado (see above).

The Oriental Republic of Uruguay is situated on the La Plata River where you will find magnificent beaches. It borders the Atlantic Ocean in the east as well as Argentina in the west and Brazil in the north.
