Peru is famous for Inca’s history and its beautiful nature – here you will experience the fascination of Inca’s antique culture. Let us introduce you to the legendary town Machu Picchu which was abandoned in the jungle for centuries. You can hike along the Inca Trail, visit the historical buildings of Cusco and the capital Lima or even meet the indigenous people. Apart from the cultural highlights, its nature and scenery contribute to the uniqueness of the country. The Titicaca Lake, which is essential to sustain life in the whole region and is also the second largest lake in the world, the great number of national parks as well as the Andes: Stunning natural spectacles await you at many places.

All these attractions make Peru a unique destination for activities in the nature, such as hiking.

1. Macchu Picchu

Peru’s most famous attraction is Machu Picchu – even though this site had been forgotten over several centuries. Machu Picchu was constructed by the Incas on a mountain crest in the 15th century. Because of the unfavorable soil, the town was built on terrace decks and had a perfectly designed water canal system among others. A few examples we encounter in Machu Picchu are enough to get a sufficient impression of how advanced Inca’s culture was by that time.

But it is not only the engineering skills of the indigenous people that make this site so fascinating: you can also enjoy a breathtaking view of the Andes’ summits which Machu Picchu is surrounded by.

Up until today nobody knows why Incas would choose such a place. But we can be certain that the town Machu Picchu only existed in legends after the Incas died out. It was not until 1911 when Hiram Binghans found this impressive site by chance.

2. Inca Trail

If you prefer an adventurous way to Machu Picchu, the Inca Trail will be the best option which is part of Inca’s ancient road system. You will walk on Inca’s legendary traces over high peaks of the Andes while enjoying the fantastic flora and fauna.

The Inca Trail, the most famous trail in South America, is for a great number of tourists indispensable to experience the real “Peru feeling”.

3. Titicaca Lake

The Titicaca Lake is the second largest lake in South America. It is fifteen times bigger than the German lake Bodensee (Lake Constance) and also the highest lake with 3.800m where water-borne trade is practiced. But what is much more important is the significant role that the lake plays for the surrounding region which is located partly in Peru, and partly in Bolivia.

It is considered the source of food (fishing), guarantees the water supply and was even the protector of the inhabitants in the past. When the indigenous tribe of the Urus was attacked by the Incas they escaped and seeked protection on floating islands made of totora reeds.

Up until today the Urus live on these islands and strictly refuse to move to the mainland. Another tribe called Quechua however, lived for a long time undiscovered on the Taquile island. One of the tribe’s main crafts, which they are famous for, is knitting, usually practiced by men. On the isle Isla de Sol you will explore the traces of the Incas in their temple.

If you like animals, this is also a good destination for you: ibises, cormorants and herons are some of the birds that can be observed here. Apart from chinchillas, vicunas and pumas you will encounter an animal around the lake that is generally known and kept as a pet, the guinea pig.

4. Cusco

The former capital of Peru is indispensable for any journey through Peru. Located in the Andes, Cusco offers cultural highlights from several eras: churches, places, Inca ruins, museums and markets as well as the Fortress of Sacsayhuaman. Even in the surroundings of Cusco you will find a lot to explore and experience.

Machu Picchu, Puca Pucara, the Red Fortress of the Incas, or Urubamatal, the Sacred Valley of the Incas are just some of the impressive destinations.

5. Lima

Lima is a huge South American metropolis and the central spot of culture, politics and finances. Estimations on the number of inhabitants vary; officially they are amounted to eight million. But, if you are familiar with the city and know where to go, you will soon be enchanted by the city’s flair. Numerous museums, theaters and stages offer you the most different programs and small bars and restaurants invite you to fill up your energy while enjoying some of Peru’s culinary highlights. The city center, which was recognized by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage site, will take you back to the colonial period.

Plaza Mayor, the government palace, the cathedral, the La Merced church, the town hall and the monastery San Francisco are some of the must-see-attractions in the capital. The surroundings also offer you many attractive excursion destinations.

During the winter season (June to September) the weather is mostly clear in the mountains, however often foggy in the coastal areas. The summer season is in coastal areas and around Lima from December to April, whereas the rainy season starts in November and ends in March.
