Most people think of Tequila, Mexican sombreros and delicious spicy food when it comes to Mexico. This is by far not everything Mexico can offer. This vast, fascinating country which is about 9 times the size of Germany has a population of about 120 million and is full of tradition, ancient cultures and impressive sceneries.

Some of Mexico’s highlights:

1. Mexico City

Nearly 120 million people live in the capital of Mexico which stands out for its great deal of cultural attractions, colorful nightlife, historical monuments and diversity.

Mexico City is very famous for its innumerable theaters. One of the best-known theater is “Palacio de Bellas Artes” (Palace of the Fine Arts) constructed between 1904 and 1934 on the East side of the park “Alameda Central”.

The historical center of the city is the Constitution Square, also known as Zócalo, which is bordered by the Cathedral, the Town Hall “Palacio Municipal”, the National Palace ”Palacio Nacional” and the seat of the president.

The Cathedral constructed in Baroque style is among the oldest and largest sacred buildings in America.

North of Zócalo, you will find the archeological site “Templo Mayor” where remains of the former temple area of Tenochtitlan have been found.

2. Teotihuacán

Teotihuacán, located about 50km northeast of Mexico City, is an archeological site with majestic pyramids. It was the capital of the highland culture of the Classic period and of great importance for the establishment of the Aztec Empire.

With 75 temples and hundreds of workshops, Teotihuacán was the biggest pre-Columbian city in America. Enormous Pyramids of the Sun (70m) and the Moon are the main attractions, as well as the ruins of Teotihuacán that were awarded 1987 UNESCO World Cultural Heritage status.

3. Palenque

In the state Chiapas which is located in the south the worldwide famous Mayan site “Palenque” can be encountered among others. Palenque is considered one of the most important sites of the Mayan culture and was declared as UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 1987.

The ruins constructed between 600 and 800 B.C. are surrounded by a hilly landscape and extend over 2km in the middle of breathtaking primeval forests.

It is assumed that up until today, only a small part of the Mayan sites has been excavated in this region, meaning that each hill is a potential cultural treasure.

So you will walk through the primeval forest along the small brooks constantly expecting to discover invaluable treasures under your feet.

Palenque was abandoned by the Mayas when the Spanish conquistadors reached Chiapas in the 16h century.

4. Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza is located on the Yucatan Peninsula, a temple town of the Mayas, and is also part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage since 1988. Lots of different characteristics make Chichen Itza a famous tourist attraction. The unique architecture enables the sun to project a pattern of light on the stairway of the Pyramid of Kukulcan that casts a shadow in shape of a giant snake winding down the pyramid and linking up the head on the base with the top. This phenomenon can be observed two times a year, on March 21st and September 23rd.

Another spectacle is the echo of the pyramid which can be heard when clapping in one direction. The echo reminds of a quetzal’s cry, a traditional bird. If you clap in the other direction however, you will perceive an echo sounding like rattlesnakes.

5. Acapulco and Cancun

Acapulco in the southwest and Cancun in the southeast are famous for fantastic, vast sandy beaches and their „24/7 beach parties“. Innumerable tourists, parties, great hotels and shopping facilities shape the very different side of Mexico.

Mexico surely is a fascinating country with a very diverse and exciting culture offering something special for everyone.
