Since many years Colombia has suffered under the image of sufficient safety so that only a little number of tourists was able to enjoy the beauty of the country in recent years. The department of foreign affaires however has confirmed that efforts to stabilize the security situation for tourists have been successful and safety standards can now be compared to other South American countries. Nevertheless, tourist numbers are rising steadily the country remains a secret tip for nature lovers and those interested in culture. The Amazon region, coral reefs, the beautiful Caribbean coast, small islands in the sea on the one hand and an impressive wildlife including monkeys, alligators and other species in various parks on the other hand describe only a small part in order to give tourists a slight image of the impressive flora and fauna of Colombia. For those interested in culture the country offers the capital Bogota, the city of Cartagena (known as the most beautiful city in whole South America) and the city of Ciudad Perdida (a pre-Columbian city) which all are definitely worth a trip.

1. Cartagena

Cartagena is probably one of the most beautiful coastal cities in Colombia build in the colonial style and also protected as world heritage by the UNESCO. The city centre is surrounded by ancient walls and laid in a valley encompassed by a beautiful mountain landscape. In the town itself you will find countless palaces and cathedrals, superb examples of architecture in an Andalusian style. Typical for Cartagena are the quarters with its narrow streets and picturesque facades in between markets with handicraft. While getting to know the city of Cartagena you need to experience an evening out. You will discover infinitely many bars and restaurants in the little streets and listen to the sound of the Champeta, the music which has its roots in Cartagena and which combines African and Caribbean lifestyle.

2. The lost city – Ciudad Perdida

The lost city of Ciudad Perdida is one of the largest rediscovered pre-Colombian cities next to Machu Picchu in Peru. In order to reach the lost city you need to walk across the woodland. You might receive an impression of the exotic flora and fauna while you walk across hanging bridges, cross mountains and trek by impressive and beautiful waterfalls. Located in the middle of the jungle, an impressive picture is created for every visitor. The Tayrona Indians have built a memorial in past times, which nowadays can be interpreted as expression for outstanding engineering and quality of life. You surely might want to take a picture of the scenery like for example large terraces connected by steep paths and roads, which have been built on mountain slopes and reflect the highly developed culture of the country. It gives you an idea of how daily live of the Indians has taken place, how trading was performed but also how sacrificial ceremonies have been carried out. The city has been forgotten due to the war with the Hispanics however rediscovered in 1975 and named as ‘Lost City’.

3. The coffee cultured landscape around Chinchiná

You might want to explore the impressive mountain landscape that surrounds Chinchana or visit the active volcano Nevado del Ruiz, the second highest active volcano in the northern hemisphere.
