If you love nature, Ecuador is the best destination for you. It is rather a small country that covers four different climate zones and offers a great and unique flora and fauna. Explore the stunning Galapagos Islands with all the sea lions and the Amazon rainforest, the high Andes or the impressive volcanoes. Also, cultural attractions in some of the most significant cities like Quito and Cuenca are definitely worth a visit. Take your time and enjoy the prehistoric temples of Ingapirca, the huge and famous indigenous market in Otavalo, or explore the beautiful and picturesque landscape on a rafting, scuba diving or mountain biking trip. In Ecuador, you will also find other adventurous activities such as Canyoning tours through the fascinating waterfalls, or Canopy tours through the breath-taking forests.

1. Quito

The capital of Ecuador is Quito, the economic and administrative center of the country where the most important decisions are made. Dive into the colorful and vibrant life of the Latin American metropolis with its imposing architecture in baroque style. Pilgrims from Europe have especially blessed this city with their fascinating culture. Discover the most impressive churches and monasteries like the Church and Monastery of St. Francis, the Basilica of the National Vow, or the La Merced Church. Do not miss out on the government palace and the city’s landmark El Panecillo which you can see from every corner of the city. Quito also offers a great deal of possibilities to go on a shopping tour, to take a break at one of the numerous small cafés, or just to enjoy the beautiful architecture and scenery of the city – it was not without reason that Quito was the world’s first city to be declared UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage Site in 1976.

2. Galapagos Islands

The world-famous Galapagos Islands are characterized by their very unique flora and fauna. They consist of 14 main islands and 100 smaller islands that are spread out across the Pacific Ocean, forming the Galapagos National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This national park is home to sea lions, giant tortoises, reef sharks and other innumerable animals. Explore these beautiful islands on a diving trip or by taking a walk – either way you will get an unforgettable experience.

3. Amazon Rainforest

The Amazon Rainforest is located in the east of Ecuador. We recommend you to start your journey in the city of Tena, for it provides a good opportunity to experience the natural habitat of numerous and diverse reptiles as well as of bigger animals. You can also observe toucans, giant otters, tapirs, jaguars, Amazon dolphins and many other fascinating and unique animals and plants. Even today, new species of plants and animals are still encountered in this region.

4. Cuenca

Cuenca, a former Inca city, is the third largest city in Ecuador and frequently considered the center of arts and culture. You will be impressed by its architecture in colonial style and its great number of churches, museums, art galleries, colonial houses and magnificent buildings in the cobbled streets. The entire old town of Cuenca has been declared UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site and is among the cities with the most churches in Latin America – up to 52. You can be part of the daily life of the inhabitants at one of the many small markets and take beautiful memories of your Ecuador trip with you.

The presidential Republic of Ecuador is located in the northwest of South America. It borders Colombia in the north, Peru in the southeast and the Pacific Ocean in the west. The country straddles the equator. The Galápagos Islands located 1000km away from Ecuador also belong to the country.

Quito with a population of about 1.8 million

National language:

Spanish, Quechua (second official language), Shuar

Important cities:

Guayaquil, Cuenca, Santo Domingo de los Colorados

Due to the extreme differences in altitude (from 0m to more than 6000m), its location on the equator and close to the Humboldt Current the climate is exceptionally diverse. The temperatures remain relatively stable over the year.

The rainy (but still sunny) season is from December to May in the Andean highlands as well as in the northern coastal regions. There are much lower rainfall levels in southern coastal stretches.

The temperatures on the Galápago Islands are rather moderate due to the cold Humboldt Current.

Entry requirements for German citizens:

German citizens do not require a visa as tourists for stays up to 90 days per year.

It is important that the passport is not damaged because it has already led to rejections in the past. The passport must be valid for a minimum period of 6 months when entering.

Compulsory vaccinations: none

Recommended vaccinations: standard vaccinations, hepatitis A, yellow fever for trips to the Amazon region or to regions east of the Andes.

Malaria: Even though the Galápagos Islands, Quito, Guayaquil and the highlands are known to be malaria free, there is a low risk of infection throughout the country in regions lower than 1500m, especially in Esmeraldas.

We recommend that you take mosquito repellents with you, also in order to prevent dengue.

IT’S YOUR TRIP does not assume any liability for the up-to-dateness and completeness of the climate information, as well as the health and entry requirements stated above.

Final binding information about entry requirements can only be obtained at the embassies and consulates of the respective countries, just as any information about health requirements can be obtained at the local public health departments.
